On-Water Nutrition

Our on the water nutrition focuses on hydration and fast acting carbohydrates paired with protein. We mix Nuun tablets or Mio into our water bottles to provide us with electrolytes and nutrients on the go. I have used different types of gel electrolyte packets before and they work well, but I still need to drink water afterwards. For both practice and racing days we store a 6-pack of reusable water bottles on our coach’s rib, each filled with a serving of electrolytes.

 

Eating on the water can be challenging as it’s hard to digest heavy and complex foods during and right after active sessions. We have found that higher carbohydrate foods balanced with some protein work well. They provide us with faster acting fuel to quickly replenish energy levels without bogging us down with an extensive digestive process. Our current snack bar of choice is the Kid’s Cliff Protein Bar. Its smaller caloric density fits our needs well. My favorite flavor is Chocolate Mint.
